Syria is an Arab country in the Middle East. Its official name is the Syrian Arab Republic .
Syria was called in the nineteenth century Bilad al-Sham. This region was once categorized and included modern Syria, Lebanon today, the current Jordan, Palestine. Earlier still, these countries were distinctly ancient Phoenicia, Palestine, Assyria and part of western Mesopotamia.
A little recent history ...
